D for Dragons

This post is brought to you by the letter D.

Dragons were cool before vampires and zombies were all the rage. I like vampires and zombies as much as the next fantasy aficionado, but can someone please bring back the dragons?!

Dragons were major players in some of my favorite fantasy novels. Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles; Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series; in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, or There and Back Again; and even in Madeleine L'Engle's A Wind in the Door, a sequel to A Wrinkle in Time.

Dragons are a classic, people! They're in mythologies of many cultures. Yeah yeah yeah. I know. So are vampires and zombies. And the undead are just psychologically scarier. Blah blah blah.

Let's see a horde of zombies against a dragon. Let's see Dracula defeat Smaug. Ha!

Now You!
Where have all the dragons gone?  Is anybody still writing about them? Can you make a good argument for zombies or vampires being better than dragons?
